Synaesthesia Subjects

We are still looking for additional color synaestetes for our ongoing synaesthesia project. We are currently studying higher synaesthetes with thought-induced color experiences. If thinking about the number 3 or the letter D almost always induces green (or some other color), you may be a higher color synaesthete and may qualify for our study. Other higher synaesthetes that may qualify include people who experience color when reasoning or making decisions, people who experience color when judging whether an act or a person is good or bad, and people who experience color when they consciously feel shame or fear. If you have other sensory experiences during thought-processes or conscious feelings, such as taste experiences or sound experiences, we would also like to hear from you. You need not be located in St. Louis to qualify. If you think you may qualify, contact the St. Louis Synaesthesia Research Group via email at brogaardb@umsl.edu

Berit, have you had synaesthetic experiences? --Or would saying compromise your position relative to your research?

Thanks for asking, Evelyn. I have many different kinds of synesthesia. I still have very weak forms of grapheme-color synesthesia and weekday-color synesthesia but they are disappearing (except, Thursday is still very orange). I recall that these two forms of synesthesia used to be much more noticeable when I was younger. Currently one of my strongest forms of synesthesia is my fear synesthesia. Here is my best attempt at describing it:

Fear Synaesthesia

The fear that links me to the bed is a winter landscape of wrinkled mountains
painted in blue and green unreal hues
a transparent pane projected out in front of me
The image spins around and around in random patterns
Faster and faster
Only slightly faster and I die

The mountain peaks rip holes in me
Blood trickles out
contaminates the blue and green tones

It seeps into the rotating valleys
The sight is unimaginably beautiful and incredibly dangerous
